Engagement Director Spotlight: Jessica Peyerk

How did you discover your passion to work with elders?

I discovered my passion for working with seniors while volunteering at local nursing homes. I completed various fields works with different populations but I always felt the most comfortable working with seniors. I learned a lot from my mother who is an occupational therapist and from my grandparents about how activity and hobbies are important for increasing or maintaining someone’s quality of life. I love my job and what I can bring to my residents.

Can you tell us about an emotional/important time in your career?

An important part of my career that made me smile was when I was teaching a “Painting with a Stonecrest Twist” class. A lot of residents that usually don’t come to crafting groups joined in on the painting class. The residents were talking about this for weeks and saying that they really enjoyed the event. This makes me smile knowing that I was able to enrich their lives. It’s important to have hobbies and things to do.

What’s your life philosophy and/or a quote that’s meaningful to you?

One of my favorite quotes is by George Matthew Allen, “People with many interests live, not only the longest but the happiest.”

What are some of your hobbies and/or things you love to do?

I am a certified therapeutic recreation specialist and a tai chi rehabilitation instructor. I was previously a dance instructor and a cycling instructor and also went to art school. I love being able to bring the things and hobbies that I love to my residents. My favorite hobbies are painting, yoga, and walking my puppy, Lola!
